WEEK 44
Upcoming Discipleship Opportunities
Today is the day after
our
local
elections. I know some are excited by the results and others disappointed. Regardless of how one feels, let us others remember two truths: First, we are called to pray for our disappointed leaders (I Timothy 2:1-2). We pray for their salvation and relationship with Jesus. We pray for their personal wellbeing. We pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and intercession in ruling. Second, we are called to help our leaders “maintain piety, justice, and peace” (Westminster Confession XXIII.2). Whether you voted for the winners or against, our duty is first and foremost to the Kingdom of God; as such we must hold our officials accountable to the infallible and objective truths of God. In light of these truths, the Sunday school class discussed the truth of experiencing the new birth. The fact of salvation is we must be born again. Being born of the Spirit is not an option for Christians and the work of the Holy Ghost often takes a back seat to works of God the Father and God the Son. However, the Reformers rediscovered the intimate and expansive work of the Third Person of the Trinity. Continued on Page 2

NOVEMBER 3, 2021 If there was ever a moment when the Holy Spirit was blatantly ignored, it was during Jesus’ trial. In our worship of the Lord’s Day, I addressed Jesus before the “Court of Public Opinion” in Mark 15:1-15. The Sanhedrin plays politics with Pilate in hopes his ego will side against Jesus. Though Pilate “sees no evil in this man,” the court of public opinion hates Truth and is willing to crucify Him. Youth Group had missed a few lessons, so we lumped together three questions from Confronting Christianity. We discussed the perceived clash between science and religion, and how historically the division was non-existent. We also discussed taking the Bible literally and the very real act of people doing violence in the name of religion. Marriage and divorce were the topics of Tuesday’s study on the Westminster Confession of Faith. We looked at the biblical design and purpose of marriage. What limits the Bible places on marriage and divorce were also addressed. In the Book of Job, the men’s Bible study was introduced to a new voice, that of Elihu. He presents a different interpretation of Job’s suffering. Though his view falls short of reality, his observation is nonetheless accurate in that suffering can be a teaching moment.
Where You Go, I Go Ruth 1:15-18
Naomi said, “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law.” But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” And when Naomi saw that she was determined to go with her, she said no more.
