Important Reminders •
Marks are important! Post-secondary schools will be making acceptance decisions based on the first report card you receive in grade 11. You need to be passing all graduation requirements and program pre-requisites at the time of application.
•
Remember that any course you take at the grade 10 or 11 level will show up on your official Ministry transcript, a permanent document that you will need to submit when applying to academic programs or even future jobs. Do your best in all your classes and ask for help if needed.
•
If you are missing a grade 10 graduation requirement (History, Science, Math, or Arts elective), make sure you are aware of what you need to do to receive the credits by June 2021.
•
If you aren’t sure what you want to do next year, start researching, speak to your parents/guardians, and make an appointment with your guidance counsellor. Application deadlines come up quickly!
•
Check admission requirements when you are researching potential programs. Find out what courses you need in order to be accepted, and if there are other conditions, such as cut-off averages, letters of intent, references, auditions, portfolios, and/or physical fitness testing.
•
If you are applying to Cégep and you are born outside of Québec, you will need to provide a copy of your birth certificate as part of your online application. Check to see if you have a legible copy; if not, order a new one now so that you have it in time for the March 1 st application deadline.
•
Once online applications are available, submit your application as soon as possible. This will give you enough time to complete your file before the deadline. Remember: incomplete applications are not sent to Cégeps or colleges for evaluation.
•
Start planning your finances. Look up costs for tuition, books, and school fees in order to determine your budget. Part-time earnings from jobs, savings, and scholarships can help reduce the amount of student loans you may potentially need to borrow.
•
Don’t forget that if you do get a conditional acceptance for your program of choice, you still need to have met all the admission requirements (e.g. prerequisite courses, cut-off averages, etc.) by the end of the school year.

Cégeps: How to Apply
The deadline for round 1 Cégep applications is Monday, March 1st, 2021. For Heritage, John Abbott, Vanier, Champlain Lennoxville and Cégep de l'Outaouais, you must apply online through SRAM. The application system opens in January, but before then you can do a mock application if desired. Use this checklist as your guide: Apply online at: https://admission.sram.qc.ca/ You will need your Permanent Code (which can be found on your report card) and your Social Insurance Number (SIN). Create an account using a valid email address. Remember, you are only allowed to select one Cégep and one program on this application. Make sure you have all the prerequisites for the program to which you are applying. If you are missing a class that you need to be accepted to your program, you must register for the summer course before the March 1st deadline. See your guidance counsellor for more information. You do not need to send in your report card or transcript unless you are taking an adult education course. All students born outside Québec must attach a scanned copy of their birth certificate to their application. Your guidance counsellor can do this for you; you must bring your birth certificate or email a copy to:

[email protected]. The application fee is 30$ (non-refundable) and can be paid online by Visa, MasterCard. A certified cheque or money order (made payable to SRAM) can also be mailed. Print and keep a copy of your final transmission receipt which has your file number on it. We also recommend taking a picture of your file number on your phone for quick reference. Admission decisions will be posted on SRAM the first week of April. There are 3 rounds of applications in case you do not get your first choice in round 1. If you receive a conditional acceptance, you must confirm your offer of admission by the required deadline. Failure to do so will result in losing your spot. Read your letter of admission carefully and follow the instructions to create your account with the Cégep to confirm your acceptance.
IMPORTANT: your application is only complete and will only be processed once SRAM has received payment and all necessary documents. Do not miss the March 1st deadline! 9
Cégeps: Heritage College at a Glance
Heritage College offers: • • •
Pre-University programs (2 years) that prepare you for further university studies. Career programs (3 years) for immediate entry into the work force or further university studies. A Springboard program.
Both types of programs lead to a Diploma of College Studies (DEC). All students take general education courses, common to all programs: • • • • •
4 English courses 3 Humanities or Philosophy courses 3 Physical Education courses 2 French courses (second language) 2 complementary courses (chosen outside the student’s field of studies)
Career Programs Accounting & Management Technology: This program provides you with a solid background in all business disciplines including accounting, marketing, human resources, and computer applications. There is a co-op work term. Graduates typically work as accounting technicians, administrators, marketing representatives, financial analysts, etc. See page 6 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Computer Science: This program provides you with knowledge in programming, web programming, databases, systems, and technical information. There is a co-op work term. Graduates are well prepared for careers as programmers or analysts, web developers, quality assurance professionals, etc. See page 8 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information.
Early Childhood Care & Education: This program helps you acquire the competencies that will provide you with the essential skills to deliver overall quality child-care and education. There is a coop work term. Graduates are qualified to work with children, from infancy to 12 years of age, in a

variety of childcare settings and elementary school classrooms, or go on to university. See page 10 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Electronics & Information Technology: This program helps you learn to design and build computer networks, tools and products, and prepares you to work in the high-tech sector or go to university. There is a co-op work term. Graduates can work in the government or business fields in areas such as computers, IT, telecommunications or manufacturing, working in design and development, production, testing, quality control, etc. See page 12 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Graphic & Web Design: This program provides you with the technical, design and communication skills to create, write, and design web content, multimedia presentations and a variety of publications. There is a co-op work term. Graduates are employed by the government and private industry. See page 14 in the viewbook. for prerequisites and further information. Hotel & Restaurant Management: This program equips you with management strategies and realworld job experience. Graduates are employment in hotel and property management, restaurant and catering management, convention and events management, etc. See page 16 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Nursing: This program supports you in becoming competent in many complex nursing roles. The focus is on critical thinking while applying knowledge from nursing, biology, psychology, and sociology. There are clinical placements (practicums). Nursing graduates can write their licencing exam and when they pass, they are prepared to work in various fields as RNs in Québec, or go to university to further their studies. See page 18 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Special Care Counselling: This program prepares you to work in a variety of settings for persons who have physical, mental, emotional and/or behavioural needs. There is a co-op work term. Graduates work in a variety of settings, such as educational institutions, short- and long-term care facilities, hospitals, shelters, CLSCs, group homes, etc. See page 20 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. You will need to submit a letter of intent and letters of reference if you are accepted to this program (it can be helpful to prepare these documents in advance).
Pre-University Programs Commerce: This program prepares you for university studies in the areas of marketing, accounting, finance, and human resources. Graduates are employed in a wide range of fields such as high technology, financial services, professional sports, tourism, health and environmental services, and government agencies. See page 24 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. 11
Liberal Arts: This program allows you to study literature, philosophy, history of science, classical and modern civilization, art and art history, film, religion, modern languages, ethics, and logic. Graduates from the Liberal Arts program are well prepared to succeed in university programs including, but not limited to, law, literature, history, philosophy and humanities, education, theatre, theology and religious studies, film and media studies, environmental studies, art history, communications, international development, journalism, political science, etc. See page 26 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Science: This program provides you with a sound scientific background in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. The science program is designed for students who plan to pursue university studies or a career in pure and applied science (e.g. agriculture, architecture, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, forestry, geology, mathematics, and physics) or health sciences (e.g. dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, nutrition, optometry, pharmacy, physical education, physiotherapy, and veterinary medicine). See page 28 in the viewbook for prerequisites and further information. Social Science: This program provides you with a background in Anthropology, Biology, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Graduates of this program—with their developed research, writing and analytical skills—are well prepared to pursue university studies in the following fields: Journalism, Social Work, Environmental Studies, Law, Teaching and Urban Planning, etc. See page 30 in the viewbook for the prerequisites and further information. Visual Arts: This program helps you to further develop your creative expression through courses using hands-on studio work in drawing, sculpture, painting, printmaking, photography, multimedia, graphic design, and video. Graduates from the Visual Arts program will have an art portfolio, as well as many opportunities to pursue further studies in fine arts, animation, computer art, photography, graphic design, fashion design, illustration, cartooning, museum curating, set and costume design, interior design, art education, etc. See page 32 in the viewbook for the prerequisites and further information.
Springboard Program If you are still undecided and wish to explore further educational options OR if you are missing prerequisites for a specific program you can apply to the Springboard program. In this program you will take high-school-level, make-up courses but these courses CANNOT be used as high school credits toward a Secondary School Diploma (DES), nor do they count as credits toward a Diploma of College Studies (DEC). All supporting documents (birth certificate, transcripts, diplomas, etc.) that are neither in English or French must be translated by a certified translator (bearing the translator’s certificate number).

Ontario Colleges: How to Apply
The deadline to apply for equal consideration at Algonquin and other Ontario colleges is Saturday, February 1st, 2020 After February 1st, students can check online to see if there is space in their program of choice and if so, they can apply. Please note, however, that many programs are competitive and fill up quickly. Applications must be completed on-line: www.ontariocolleges.ca. Click on APPLY NOW. Create a New User OCAS (Ontario College Application System) Account. Use an email address that you check regularly to create your account. Write down your application number: ____-______-______ Cost: 95$ (non-refundable). Your application will not be processed until the payment is made. You can apply to a maximum of 5 programs, but not more than 3 at any one college (e.g. if you are only applying to Algonquin, you can apply to up to 3 programs). You must send your Ministry transcript and your first Gr. 11 report card to Ontario Colleges. Your guidance counsellor can do this for you; however, we will need to your application number and the name of the college(s) and program(s) to which you have applied. It’s always a good idea to print a copy of your final transmission receipt at the end of your application. Colleges may begin to send offers of admission as early as February 1st. You must confirm your acceptance of an offer of admission by May 1 st. Log into your ontariocolleges.ca account to confirm your offer. The colleges require payment of a tuition deposit in mid-June to secure your spot in your program. This information will be communicated to you by the college. Your final high school transcript will need to be sent to ontariocolleges.ca in July.

Adult Education
Some students choose to register for Adult Education after finishing up at D’Arcy. If you are missing credits for your Secondary School Diploma, or if you would like to obtain pre-requisites for Cégep, university, or vocational training, enrolling at an Adult Education Centre can allow you to achieve your goals. You must be at least 16 years of age by June 30th in order to register. Vocational Training
Vocational programs offer job-specific training and are geared toward helping students prepare to go directly from school into their chosen career. This could include careers in the skilled trades, health care, social services, business, culinary, technology, cosmetology and esthetics, design and media arts, and many more. Vocational training offers a hands-on approach to learning, and students graduate with practical skills and experience. There is often an internship, co-op, or apprenticeship component to the programs. There are vocational programs offered at numerous colleges, Cégeps, and centres. Deadlines are different for each university. It is recommended that applicants apply by December 1 st. Applicants can apply to as many Ontario universities as they wish but are limited to THREE programs at any one university. How the Québec and Ontario Systems Differ
Most Québec colleges, known as Cégeps, offer two distinctly different types of programs: 2-year PreUniversity programs which lead to University, or 3-year Career Programs which lead to a highly skilled occupations (or further studies). •
The local English-language Cégep is Heritage College.
•
Ontario Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology offer mainly career-type programs, which vary in length from 15 weeks to three years.
•
The local English-language Ontario College is Algonquin College.
•
Most Québec Cégeps do not charge tuition fees; Cégep students only pay for textbooks and school fees.
Québec University Admission requirements •
Québec universities require the Cégep 2-Year Pre-university collegial diploma for admission. The Cégep diploma, Diplôme d’Études Collégiales (D.E.C.) is awarded after successfully completing a 2-year Pre-university program.
•
The Québec English-language universities are Bishop’s, Concordia and McGill.
•
Québec Universities also have lower tuition costs for Québec residents.
Ontario University Admission Requirements •
Ontario universities, such as Carleton University and University of Ottawa, in general require the first year of a Cégep Pre-University program to be successfully completed for admission to a first-year university program.
•
Québec students who successfully complete a two-year Pre-university Cégep program are sometimes admitted into their second year in an Ontario University. In general, the first year of Cégep is equivalent to last-year of high school in other provinces, and a second year of Cégep is equivalent to first-year of University in other provinces.
•
Strong academic students may also have the option of direct admission into the University of Ottawa (must have an 83% average). 22
Loans and Bursaries
Residents in Québec can apply for student loans and bursaries through Aide financière aux études at http://www.mesrs.gouv.qc.ca/en/aide-financiere-aux-etudes/. Below are the conditions to be eligible for financial aid: • • • • •

Create an online account using the website above. Click the Full-time or Part-time forms tab. Check that you are in the 2020-2021 Loans and Bursaries Program section. Click on Application for Financial Assistance. Submit all documents listed in the Required Documents section.

You may apply for financial assistance before you are enrolled at an educational institution. You may apply for financial assistance after you have started your post-secondary schooling. The amount of financial assistance you will receive is dependent upon your income, parent/guardian income, number of dependent children in your household, cost of tuition, living expenses, and where you are studying. You may receive financial assistance through the special needs program, if you qualify. A portion of the money granted may be a loan (which you have to pay back) and a portion may be a bursary (which you do not have to pay back).
