processes and behavior. Wilhelm wundt is founder of psychology. School of psychology is a group of psychologists having similar points of views and making approaches to study human mind and behavior. Structuralism is one of the major school of psychology. Structuralism sought to analyze the adult mind in terms of the simplest definable components and then to find the way in which these components fit together in complex forms. Behavior and personality were beyond the scope considered by structuralism.

FOUNDER OF STRUCTURALISM Wilhelm wundt:  German philosopher.  He is “ father of experimental

psychology”.  In 1879, wundt founded the first formal laboratory for psychological research at the university of Leipzig.  The school of psychology that Wundt began and championed all his life is referrer to as “ structuralism”.  For this reason, Wundt is often referred to as the father of structuralism.

Edward B. Titchener  Titchener was a student of

Wundt.  He is American psychologist who translated “ Principles of psychological “ in English.  He develop structuralism based on the ideas or concepts of his teacher.  He and his teacher both tried to describe the structure of mind with the help of introspection method.

WHAT IS STRUCTURALISM  Structuralism is generally thought of

as the first school of thought in psychology.  It’s the study of anatomy of mind.  It’s the theory that the structure of conscious experience could be understood by analyzing the basic elements of the thoughts and sensations.  The focus of structuralism was on reducing mental processes down into their most basic elements. Psychologist used techniques such as introspection to analyze the inner processes of the human mind.

INTROSPECTION  It’s a method used in Structuralism.  The main technique that was used to

try and determine the different components of consciousness was introspection. Or the observation and recording of the one’s own subjective experience such as feelings, thoughts.  By 1940, introspection disappeared from scientific psychology.

MAJOR KEY FEATURES OF STRUCTURALISM  Structuralism attempts to analyze world as a production of ideas.  There is death of the subject, that is, the individual in structural

analyses is dead. Individual is created by societies; societies are not created by him.  Structuralism is against historicism and empiricism.  Language and speech are different: language is social, it develops overtimes, speech is individual.  Language consists of speech, sign and semiotics.  The meaning of a linguistic sign depends upon its relationship to other signs.  Signs are the basic units of language. They have two aspects: signifier and signified, signifier is the ‘material’ aspect and signified is the conceptual aspect

MERITS  Cheapest and most economical method.  No need of apparatus or laboratory.  Can be used anytime and anywhere.  Easily and readily available to individual.  Only method which helps a person to know and discover

own feelings and emotions.  This methods gradually led to the development of more objective methods.

LIMITATIONS  Data collected by introspection can not be verified/ proved.  It is possible that the reporter may knowingly lie or hide

facts to mislead.  It can only be done by adults and not children.  It needs highly trained and skilled workers.

CONCLUSION  Structuralism is important because it’s the first major      

school of thought in psychology. Its helps in the approval of psychology as separate science. Structuralism is also influenced experimental psychology. Its provides bases for the study of mind under its elements. It provides techniques of using introspection method in education. Introspection the observation and recording of the one’s own subjective experience It provide base for further study in psychology.
